We Hold Our Cycle in Manhattan

New York City’s Trailblazing Arthouse Film and Multiarts Event… with Central American flair

New York City's pioneering film and multiarts event inspired by Central American culture returns to  La Nacional -- the venerable Manhattan arts organization that has welcomed us since our founding -- for the eighth consecutive year.  This year we screen 338 films from 23 countries and 35 directors in all styles and genres (many of them world, US or New York premieres), with strong showings by women directors and women’s themes, and a specialty in contemporary Central American art house. We’ll have some of the most powerful documentaries you’ve ever seen, and a great selection of shorts.  The Cycle also offers surprises in visual arts, crafted goods, live performance and Central American delicacies for a memorable film-viewing experience that has made a niche of its own in the city’s bustling arts landscape.

 THE EARTHLY MEN

(Animation)

Fri. Jan 4 @ 4:00 pm

Sun. Jan. 6 @ 7:15 pm

(SCR/DIR liuyi, CHINA, 2018, color, 05:00. Animation.) Who are the earthly men, duckweed? Lonely, nameless, raceless ones who have nothing in common with you. They are you. A mobile space in the sea, borderline lost in fiction and in real life, constantly seeking the self... We do not want to face the real world, which reflects our smallness. We face a hard struggle as we pursue a ghost. Exhausted and misshapen, we escape into distorted feelings to perceive the world. If you avoid a part of yourself all the time, or keep the ugly self under wraps, you become careful creature of concealment and the hypocrisy from the real self makes us alienated. Those who find themselves in such a situation will not correct their mistakes, distort the natural character of man, and make the differences between man and woman larger and larger.
