An encounter with this artist and master of the lens at an edition of “A Night at La Nacional,” the monthly arts and film event we held at our Manhattan venue of La Nacional over a nine-month trial period in 2025, lead to further conversations and a chain of events whereby we now have the honor of welcoming him to share the full breadth of his talents with us as photographer and filmmaker.

Captured in the City Grid, the large-format photo exhibit that will occupy the gallery space at La Nacional for the three days of our event, will be his first since he moved from his native Berlin to New York City, which he now calls home. A highly adventuresome, experienced world traveler, his work reflects a first-hand friendship with high-risk situations. This, along with the insatiable curiosity he exhibits for the vastness and diversity of our Five-Cities-in-One, our “Baghdad-on-the-Hudson,” as O. Henry monikered it, lend magnetism and fascination to his work.

His film #WAY_AURELIO, which screens in both Manhattan and The Bronx (see Marquee page) speaks eloquently, again, to the derring-do of his craft, this time serving a verité-style vehicle about crossing into the US illegally from Mexico that speaks to a time that now seems remote. The behind-the-scenes of his production process, conducted in peril and on short notice, speak to meticulous planning so that the extraordinary technical and physical dexterity shown on screen keep from veering into the deadly.

To cap off his participation in this our first major event of the year, Alan has also graciously offered to provide free photo box sessions both at La Nacional in Manhattan and in The Bronx to community members on a first-come-first-served basis. With his long experience working in high fashion and commercial production, he will produce out-of-this-world portraits. Full schedule available in the .pdf catalogue and on the Marquee page.

Alan Rexroth

Filmmaker and Photographer

When I came to New York, I could have imagined just about anything. Except that my Nikon would become the door opener, the key to the city’s treasure chest. What has always been a pastime, a balance to my filmmaking career, has turned into an additional chapter of my professional creative work. This is what’s left after deep dives into the nervous system, the grid, the pulse of the city.

It marks my first photo exhibition in Manhattan. The unifying theme is the individual in relation to the urban network - my haul of the last few months since I’ve been in NYC.

During the exhibition, I will be present every day from 11 to 3:30pm to shoot professional portraits for interested visitors. Bring your mood, your edge, and curiosity. I’ll bring the creative force and the lens. No registration required.
